Caleb Miller (17) hiking the Appalachian Trail to raise $5,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

“I shall pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore I can do, or any kindness I can show to any human being let me do it now, let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

Most of us just read these words by Stephen Grellet and move on to the next item on our daily routine. Let me introduce you to someone who lives by these words and has decided to take action.

Caleb Miller

Caleb Miller is a seventeen year old high school student and ultralight hiker, who is on the Appalachian Trail to create awareness for Cystic Fibrosis and to raise $5,000 towards this cause. As of this post, he’s already raised $3,230.00.

Over the weekend I was approached by Jessica T. , Caleb’s girlfriend. Jess told us about Caleb, who got his inspiration after seeing a young neighbor and friend suffer with Cystic Fibrosis. Caleb decided to give up his summer and hike the 1,000 miles from Pine Grove Furnace, Pennsylvania to Mt. Katahdin, Maine.

George Gross of  York Dispatch covered his story titled “Dallastown student takes on Appalachian Trail”  http://www.charity-charities.org/news.php?artid=1062121 .

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that:

  • clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and
  • obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

(to learn more about the disease please click on the link http://www.cff.org/AboutCF/Faqs/ )

Caleb is maintaining a trail journal at http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=350571 . He is taking strides to make “CF” stand for “Cure Found!” Visit Caleb’s Great Strides Donation Home Page at http://www.cff.org/great_strides/CalebMiller7319

I am impressed by his resolve and perseverance to make a difference in others lives. Please donate generously if you can, and/or share it with everyone and help Caleb reach his goal.

We wish Caleb success in this endeavor and in life …happy trails!

Join us in supporting AGAINST MALARIA Foundation

http://www.AgainstMalaria.com/45N68W

Against Malaria is an initiative of the Against Malaria Foundation, a charity registered in the UK, US, Australia and a number of other countries.

The Foundation was set up in August 2004 with the explicit aim of handling the money raised through World Swim Against Malaria. Since then Against Malaria has launched a number of other initiatives and has developed a significant number of fundraising partnerships whereby groups raising funds for nets, often for their own distributions, raise funds through Against Malaria. They do not take a cut or a fee so 100% of the funds these groups raise buys nets for them.

As stated in the Articles of Association of the Foundation, the official document describing their purpose, their aims are:

“…the relief of suffering from malaria by the provision of funds for the prevention and/or treatment of malaria and the advancement of education in the subjects of a) the problems and suffering caused by malaria and b) what can be done to alleviate them.”

More specifically, 100% of the money they receive buys long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets (LLINs).
