Caleb Miller (17) hiking the Appalachian Trail to raise $5,000 for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

“I shall pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore I can do, or any kindness I can show to any human being let me do it now, let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

Most of us just read these words by Stephen Grellet and move on to the next item on our daily routine. Let me introduce you to someone who lives by these words and has decided to take action.

Caleb Miller

Caleb Miller is a seventeen year old high school student and ultralight hiker, who is on the Appalachian Trail to create awareness for Cystic Fibrosis and to raise $5,000 towards this cause. As of this post, he’s already raised $3,230.00.

Over the weekend I was approached by Jessica T. , Caleb’s girlfriend. Jess told us about Caleb, who got his inspiration after seeing a young neighbor and friend suffer with Cystic Fibrosis. Caleb decided to give up his summer and hike the 1,000 miles from Pine Grove Furnace, Pennsylvania to Mt. Katahdin, Maine.

George Gross of  York Dispatch covered his story titled “Dallastown student takes on Appalachian Trail”  http://www.charity-charities.org/news.php?artid=1062121 .

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that:

  • clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and
  • obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

(to learn more about the disease please click on the link http://www.cff.org/AboutCF/Faqs/ )

Caleb is maintaining a trail journal at http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=350571 . He is taking strides to make “CF” stand for “Cure Found!” Visit Caleb’s Great Strides Donation Home Page at http://www.cff.org/great_strides/CalebMiller7319

I am impressed by his resolve and perseverance to make a difference in others lives. Please donate generously if you can, and/or share it with everyone and help Caleb reach his goal.

We wish Caleb success in this endeavor and in life …happy trails!

Tales from the Wild

Following are claimed to be actual comments left in 1996 on U. S. Forest Service registration sheets and comment cards by backpackers completing wilderness camping trips:

  • “A small deer came into my camp and stole my bag of pickles. Is there a way I can get reimbursed? Please call.”
  • “Escalators would help on steep uphill sections.”
  • “Ban walking sticks in wilderness. Hikers that use walking sticks are more likely to chase animals.”
  • “Instead of a permit system for hikers, the Forest Service needs to reduce worldwide population growth to limit the number of visitors to wilderness.”
  • “Trails need to be wider so people can walk while holding hands.”
  • “Found a smouldering cigarette left by a horse.”
  • “Trails need to be reconstructed. Please avoid building trails that go uphill.”
  • “Please pave the trails so they can be plowed of snow in the winter.”
  • “Chair lifts need to be in some places so that we can get to wonderful views without having to hike to them.”
  • “The coyotes made too much noise last night and kept me awake. Please meradicate (sic) these annoying animals.”
  • “Reflectors need to be placed on trees every 50 feet so people can hike at night with flashlights.”
  • “Need more signs to keep area pristine.”
  • “A McDonald’s would be nice at the trailhead.”
  • “The places where trails do not exist are not well marked.”
  • “Too many rocks in the mountains.”

and our favorite……..

  • “Too many bugs and leeches and spiders and spider webs. Please spray the wilderness to rid the area of these pests.”

Another success with 45ºN 68ºW

45ºN 68ºW Natural Insect Repellent next to US Coastguard Geodetic Survey Marker on Katahdin

“I would have never made it through the day without it. This makes two weeks in a row I’ve hiked in a river valley so thick with mosquitoes that you can hear them on my digital recordings and see them on video. Hiking season is officially over, at least in the bottomlands! Unless you have a headnet, or 45N68W.  It beat back the hordes at Fisheating Creek, and that’s saying something. And Tuesday, it saved me from becoming lunch in another river valley. I’m still extraordinarily impressed with this stuff. ”

Sherlock Holmes (Humor)

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went on a camping trip.  After a good meal and a bottle of red, they lay down for the night and went to sleep.

Some hours later Holmes woke up, nudged his faithful friend and said, “Watson, I want you to look up at the sky and tell me what you see.”  Watson said, “I see millions and millions of stars.”  Sherlock said, “And what does that tell you?”

After a minute or so of pondering Watson said, “Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets.  Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo.  Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three in the morning.  Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant.  Metereologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day today.  What does it tell you?”

Holmes was silent for about 30 seconds and said, “Watson, you idiot!  Someone has stolen our tent!”
