Mosquito Coil – A Deadly Insect Repellent

Mosquito coil is mosquito-repelling incense, usually shaped into a spiral, and
typically made from a dried paste of pyrethrum powder. The coil is usually held at the center of the spiral, suspending it in the air, or wedged by two pieces of
fireproof nettings to allow continuous smoldering. Burning usually begins at the
outer end of the spiral and progresses slowly toward the centre of the spiral,
producing a mosquito-repellent smoke. A typical mosquito coil can measure around 6 inches (15 cm) in diameter and lasts up to 8 hours. Mosquito coils are widely used in Asia, Africa, and South America. [Source: Wikipedia]

I recently came across a study published by J. Zhang, School of Public Health and Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute, UMDNJ and Rutgers University. According to the researchers, the smoke that is emitted by
these mosquito coils may contain pollutants that can be of serious health concern, posing “significant acute and chronic risks.

In the study, it was discovered that significant amounts of volatile organic
compounds in it, including carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals), were found in the smoke from mosquito coils.

Burning one mosquito coil released the same amount of particulate matter as burning 75-137 cigarettes would emit. The amount of formaldehyde (an irritating carcinogen that effects many processes inside body) emission from one mosquito coil was as high as that emitted when 51 cigarettes are burnt,” the researchers said.

Would YOU expose your loved ones to smoke from 100 cigarettes each day?

In another study by UC Riverside scientists, many mosquito coils – most notably those manufactured in Asia – often contain up to one percent BCME (which stands for bis[cloromethyl]ether, a chemical associated with the breakdown of S-2). BCME has been described as “the most potent lung cancer chemical ever discovered.” And lung cancer is just about the most deadly cancer known. In one Chinese factory where mosquito coils were manufactured, a large fraction of employees were dead within five years of starting their jobs. The cause? Lung cancer. Source

The use of mosquito coils as an insect repellent is not only prevalent in Asia, Africa and South America but also readily available and used throughout United States. The dangers of chemical based insect repellents have been well documented and it is evident that mosquito coils smoke poses both acute and chronic health risks and one should avoid their usage.

You can take preventative measures to avoid contracting vector-borne
disease including Malaria, West Nile Virus etc.. Here are 13 ways to eliminate mosquitoes from your home:

  1. Maintain hygienic conditions around your home.
  2. Reduce or Eliminate their preferred breeding grounds — standing, stagnant water. Mosquitoes will develop in any puddle that lasts more than 4 days.
  3. Discard any containers around your home that could accumulate water.
  4. Eliminate standing water on flat roofs.
  5. Replace water in the bird baths (frequently).
  6. Drain water from kid’s wading pools.
  7. Don’t leave your swimming pool unattended.
  8. Clean clogged roof gutters.
  9. Mow your lawn regularly.
  10. Plant naturally repelling plants including geranium, lavender, rosemary, citronella, catnip, lemongrass, chrysanthemums, marigold, penny-royal, basil etc.
  11. Make sure you have insect screens installed on all your windows and doors of your home.
  12. Wear light colored loose, long sleeved shirts and long pants.
  13. Replace regular incandescent bulbs around your home with LED lights, yellow bug lights and sodium lamps.

Not All Insects are Harmful.

Of all the insect species, over 97 percent of those usually seen in the home landscape are either beneficial or are “innocent bystanders” so make sure the insect repellent you use is not harmful to them.

Another statistic according to the Natural History Museum in London only 1000 of the 1 million discovered insect species, is actually a ‘pest’.

A safe alternate to DEET + other chemical based insect repellents

neu·ro·tox·in

/ˈn(y)o͝orōˌtäksin/

Noun
A poison that acts on the nervous system.

A report by Vincent Corbel of the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement in Montpellier, and Bruno Lapied from the University of Angers, France, released in 2009 found evidence that DEET could be toxic to the central nervous system.

The active ingredient in many insect repellents, deet, has been found to be toxic to the central nervous system. Researchers writing in the open access journal BMC Biology say that more investigations are urgently needed to confirm or dismiss any potential neurotoxicity to humans, especially when deet-based repellents are used in combination with other neurotoxic insecticides.

Vincent Corbel from the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement in Montpellier, and Bruno Lapied from the University of Angers, France, led a team of researchers who investigated the mode of action and toxicity of deet (N,N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide). Corbel said, “We’ve found that deet is not simply a behavior-modifying chemical but also inhibits the activity of a key central nervous system enzyme, acetycholinesterase, in both insects and mammals”.

Discovered in 1953, deet is still the most common ingredient in insect repellent preparations. It is effective against a broad spectrum of medically important pests, including mosquitoes. Despite its widespread use, controversies remain concerning both the identification of its target sites at the molecular level and its mechanism of action in insects. In a series of experiments, Corbel and his colleagues found that deet inhibits the acetylcholinesterase enzyme – the same mode of action used by organophosphate and carbamate insecticides. These insecticides are often used in combination with deet, and the researchers also found that deet interacts with carbamate insecticides to increase their toxicity. Corbel concludes, “These findings question the safety of deet, particularly in combination with other chemicals, and they highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the development of safer insect repellents for use in public health”.

Although DEET is classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a non-carcinogen, some also claim that DEET can cause cancer, in addition to a number of other health problems from seizures to birth defects. Consumers are left to decide whether to apply DEET based products and accept the unknown risks or expose themselves unprotected to mosquitoes and other biting insects which could spread serious and often life-threatening diseases such as Lyme Disease, Dengue, Malaria and West Nile Virus.

Following are  some additional references online:

The Pesticide Information Project of Cooperative Extension Offices of Cornell University states that “Everglades National Park employees having extensive DEET exposure were more likely to have insomnia, mood disturbances and impaired cognitive function than were lesser exposed co-workers”.

Join us in supporting AGAINST MALARIA Foundation

Against Malaria is an initiative of the Against Malaria Foundation, a charity registered in the UK, US, Australia and a number of other countries.

The Foundation was set up in August 2004 with the explicit aim of handling the money raised through World Swim Against Malaria. Since then Against Malaria has launched a number of other initiatives and has developed a significant number of fundraising partnerships whereby groups raising funds for nets, often for their own distributions, raise funds through Against Malaria. They do not take a cut or a fee so 100% of the funds these groups raise buys nets for them.

As stated in the Articles of Association of the Foundation, the official document describing their purpose, their aims are:

“…the relief of suffering from malaria by the provision of funds for the prevention and/or treatment of malaria and the advancement of education in the subjects of a) the problems and suffering caused by malaria and b) what can be done to alleviate them.”

More specifically, 100% of the money they receive buys long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets (LLINs).
